Guest Lecture at Falmouth University
I had the privilege of giving my very first guest lecture at Falmouth University, speaking to the third-year Graphic Design students. It’s one thing to work on design projects, pitch to clients after weeks of research and prep. Another to stand in front of a group of 50+ students who are about to step out into the industry.
I spoke about my journey as a freelance designer: how I got started, the lessons I learned the hard way, and the creative process I’ve developed over the years. More than anything, I wanted to be honest about the realities of freelancing the freedom it offers, the challenges it brings, and the joy that comes from carving your own path.

If you know me, you’ll know how much I love what I do. So to be able to speak openly about that passion, and to see it resonate with students who are just beginning their own journeys, was really special. Their questions were sharp, thoughtful, and a reminder of how bright the future of design is. What struck me most was the energy in the room. It felt less like a lecture and more like a conversation about the possibilities of a creative career. I left feeling inspired by them as much as I hope they felt inspired by me.
Freelancing is such an important topic for emerging creatives, and I’m glad to see it becoming part of the conversation in education. It’s not just a fallback option for many of us, it’s a powerful, exciting way to build a career on our own terms.
A huge thank you to Steve House for inviting me to speak and for making it such a warm, memorable experience.
